He was drunk in The Slap, formidable in Bikie Wars, now Anthony Hayes is unrecognisable as anti-asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton in Devil’s Dust.

The two-part series tells the story of Banton’s battle for compensation against James Hardie, the corporate giant which for years continued to manufacture asbestos products despite evidence of its dangers to health.

Lisa Miller, whose father-in-law, a former James Hardie employee, died of mesothelioma, said Devil’s Dust hit too close to home.

“Our family lived this tragedy and terrifyingly there will be thousands more,” she said.

“James Hardie knew the dangers of asbestos … and continued manufacturing it regardless.”

Devil’s Dust concludes tonight on ABC1.
