Victoria Police and Melbourne’s Lord Mayor have welcomed the launch of an emergency response trial to protect taxi drivers from assaults.
Commencing this weekend, three vehicles staffed by trained security guards, known as Tiger Teams, will patrol the city streets each Friday and Saturday night.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said he supported any initiative to make Melbourne safer.
“This is to lower the temperature when things are getting out of control,” he said.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton said Tiger Teams would not replace police and would be monitored closely.
“We see any initiatives to improve driver safety and prevent crime as being a positive thing,” he said. Read the full story here
