Perfect spring day for Melbourne Marathon

30,000 runners were bathed in sunshine as they ran into the MCG for the Melbourne Marathon festival this morning.

Western Australian Lauren Shelley qualified for the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow with her winning marathon time of 2:36.29.

Runner up Jane Fardell’s time of 2:37.54 also earned her an automatic qualification for the Australian team.

For Oak Park’s Mark Dobson, finishing the race on the hallowed turf of the MCG made his first marathon particularly special.

“It’s something I never thought I would have a chance to do,” he said.

Mr Dobson said conditions were perfect.

“It was a beautiful day—not windy, not too hot.”
