Niche markets key to newspaper survival

Fairfax and News Limited may be heading for digital first, but one editor is confident of a future in print.

Southbank Local News editor Sean Rogasch said online journalism segregated the market.

“Niche targeting of a section of society is the way print media will evolve,” he said.

Mr Rogasch occasionally breaks stories on social media, but they usually appear first in the monthly newspaper.

Former Herald Sun online editor Greg Hackett said breaking news online was risky.

“No second set of eyes was looking at what was published,” he said.

Mr Hackett said community newspapers could survive the digital revolution because they were not carrying loss-making divisions like the majors.
